Runic formulas and staves
Important Disclaimer and Safety Fundamentals
Before beginning work with runic symbolism, it is necessary to understand the context and boundaries of this practice:
Symbolic and psychological nature of the practice. Working with runes in the modern world is an esoteric, meditative, and psychosymbolic discipline. It serves as a tool for focusing attention, structuring intentions, and inner reflection.
Absence of unconditional guarantees. No formula or graphic symbol is capable of mechanically changing physical reality contrary to the laws of nature, logic, and the person's own actions.
Limits of applicability (Disclaimer). Runic practices under no circumstances replace:
-
professional medical and psychiatric help;
-
psychotherapeutic counseling;
-
legal and juridical protection;
-
financial and business planning.
History and modernity. The Elder Futhark (24 runes) historically was a Germanic alphabet with sacred and everyday applications. Complex multi-component runic staves, detailed statements, and rules of activation by the four elements are to a significant degree products of modern esoteric tradition (20th–21st centuries) and Icelandic late-medieval magic (galdrabóks), and not documented practices of the Viking Age. In this guide, modern methods are considered precisely as modern models of working with archetypes.
2. Formats of Runic Records: Formula, Bindrune, Stave
In modern practice, three main formats of graphic combination of runes are distinguished.
[ Runic formula ] ---> F - U - T - A - R - K (in a line) [ Bindrune (tied) ] ---> Runes united by common stems [ Runic stave ] ---> Cruciform or radial geometry
1. Runic formula (runescript)
What it is: A sequence of 2–7 runes, written in one line (from left to right).
Principle of action: Runes are read and “work” sequentially, like links in a single chain (cause → process → result).
Advantages: Simplicity of composition, transparency of meanings, minimal risk of unintended hidden signs arising.
2. Bound rune (bindrune, ligature)
What it is: A monogram in which several runes are superimposed on one another and share common vertical axes (staves/strokes) or branches.
Principle of action: Synergy — the runes act simultaneously as a single complex symbol.
Advantages: Compactness; suitable for application on talismans, rings, small amulets.
3. Runic stave
What it is: A complex geometric structure, often having a central axis, rays (cruciform, four-, six-, eight-rayed) or inscribed in circles and geometric figures.
Principle of action: Multilevel influence, where the center sets the essence of the intention, and the rays determine directions of protection, filtration, or transformation.
Advantages: Suitable for complex long-term tasks.
3. Basic Meanings of the Elder Futhark Runes (in the Context of Modeling)

4. Step-by-Step Algorithm for Creating a Formula or Stave
+-------------------------------------------------------------+ | 1. Formulation of the goal (without negations and vague phrases) | +-------------------------------------------------------------+ ↓ +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | 2. Selection of runes: Foundation (Essence) → Process → Result | +-------------------------------------------------------------+ ↓ +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | 3. Graphic composition (formula, ligature or stave) | +-------------------------------------------------------------+ ↓ +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | 4. Check for background runes | +-------------------------------------------------------------+ ↓ +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | 5. Composition of the statement and determination of the term of action | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
Step 1. Specification of the task
The goal must be positively formulated, ecological, and directed at oneself or one's processes.
Incorrect: “I want everything to be good and no one to interfere.”
Correct: “Activation of concentration of attention for successful passing of the qualification exam within two weeks.”
Step 2. Selection of the runic triad
A classical formula consists of three positions:
-
First rune (Impulse / Source): that from which the work begins (forces, intention, resource).
-
Central rune (Process / Movement): the main mechanism of transformation or protection.
-
Final rune (Result / Fixation): the desired outcome, consolidation of the state.
Step 3. Graphic construction
If you are a beginner, give preference to a linear formula. It excludes confusion.
When creating a bindrune, connect the runes so that their main vertical lines coincide, but the silhouettes are readable without distortions.
Step 4. Analysis of background signs
When overlaying lines in staves or ligatures, silhouettes of other runes often accidentally form (for example, the intersection of two straight lines forms the rune Gebo, the connection of a vertical and slants — Nauthiz or Isa).
Carefully examine the drawing.
If an accidentally arisen rune contradicts the goal (for example, the rune of destruction Hagalaz in a formula of harmonization), change the geometry or return to linear recording.
5. Rules of Application, Statement, Activation, and Completion of Work
Choice of medium
-
Paper / Cardboard: Optimal medium for short-term and medium-term tasks (from several days to a couple of months).
-
Wood, leather, stone, metal: For long-term talismans (home protection, personal amulet of stability).
-
Own body (hand, wrist): Only for short-term processes (for several hours or 1–2 days; washable marker or essential oil is used).
Structure of a correct and neutral statement
The statement is a verbal fixation of the stave's program. It is composed in a calm, affirmative language without mystical exaltation, threats, and emotional breakdown.
A universal formula of the statement includes 4 blocks:
-
Address / Name: “This runic formula (stave), consisting of the runes [enumeration],...”
-
Action: “...directs attention and forces to [clear description of the task]...”
-
Ecology (safety): “...works harmoniously for my physical and psycho-emotional health, without harm to the well-being of those around...”
-
Conditions of launch and stop: “...is activated [by breath / intention / touch] and deactivated [by burning the medium with gratitude / washing with water] upon completion of the task.”
Activation
In modern practice, activation is understood as the moment of concentrating attention on the sign and launching the mental program:
-
By breath: deep inhale, concentration on the sign and exhale through the palms onto the medium.
-
By touch / Attention: visualization of the runes as glowing lines and pronunciation of the statement aloud.
Completion of work and deactivation
The formula should not remain “suspended” forever. When the task is completed or the set term has expired:
-
Thank the symbolic instrument for its service (inner state of gratitude).
-
Paper medium: carefully burn, and scatter the ashes to the wind or dispose of with running water.
-
Wooden / stone amulet: wash with running water or bury in the earth if its function is completed.
-
From the body: wash off with soap and water, fixing the fact of completion of the formula's action.

The formula is activated by breath and deactivated after three days by utilization of the medium with gratitude.”
7. Typical Mistakes of Beginners
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ WHAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED │ ├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ 1. “Cumbersome staves”: 15–20 runes in one complex web │ │ 2. Attempt to solve medical and financial problems with runes │ │ 3. Vague statement with mutually exclusive paragraphs │ │ 4. Magical passivity (absence of real actions) │ │ 5. Violation of personal boundaries of third parties without their consent │ │ 6. Ignoring deactivation of spent formulas │ └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Excessive complexity of staves. Beginners often take multi-complex “author's staves” from the internet with dozens of interwoven signs. Not understanding the role of each element, the operator receives chaos instead of directed intention. Start with simple linear formulas of 3 signs.
Shifting of responsibility. No Fehu rune will bring money if the person is not looking for work or developing skills; the runes Uruz and Berkano will not cure inflammation without a visit to the doctor. Runes are a focus for the will, and not a replacement for actions.
Use of formulas to harm other people (destructive magic, love spells, suppression of will). Any attempts to impose one's will on another person create a deep inner psychological conflict in the operator themselves, intensify anxiety and destroy constructive focus.
Indefinite work of staves. If the term and method of destruction are not stipulated, the medium over time loses relevance, cluttering the working space and scattering attention.
Fear of “errors in inscription.” Runes are a symbolic language. A small unevenness of a line will not bring “wrath of the gods.” What is important is awareness, calmness and understanding of exactly what you are drawing.
8. Compact Memo for Practice (Checklist)
Before applying any sign, answer 6 control questions for yourself:
-
Goal: Can I formulate the task in one simple sentence without the particle “not”?
-
Meaning: Do I understand the meaning of each chosen rune and why it stands exactly in this place?
-
Graphics: Are there no undesirable accidentally formed runes in the combination?
-
Ecology: Is the action directed exclusively at me and my personal resources/tasks?
-
Term and deactivation: Do I know when and by what method I will close this formula (burn, wash off, utilize)?
-
Real steps: What physical actions in the real world will I undertake in parallel with creating this formula to achieve my goal?
