Runes of the Elder Futhark:
The Elder Futhark is the oldest known runic writing system, used by Germanic tribes from approximately the 2nd to the 8th century AD (the Migration Period and the Vendel Period).
The word "futhark" is formed as an acronym from the sound values of the first six characters:
Unlike later regional variants — the Younger Futhark of the Viking Age (reduced to 16 characters) and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (expanded to 28–33 characters) — the Elder Futhark consisted strictly of 24 characters.
Writing and Sources
In historical scholarship, the runes of the Elder Futhark are regarded first and foremost as an alphabetic-phonetic system. Archaeological finds (inscriptions on spearheads, bracteates, bracteate-like amulets, fibulae, and rune stones such as the Kylver Stone) attest that the runes served to record the names of owners and craftsmen, magical protective formulas, and brief memorial texts.
Historical Reconstruction and Modern Esotericism
For a correct understanding of the subject it is essential to distinguish two layers:
The scholarly-historical layer (runology and linguistics): the original Proto-Germanic names of the Elder Futhark runes have not been preserved in the form of a single ancient list. They have been scientifically reconstructed by linguists (which is why an asterisk * is placed before them) on the basis of a comparison of the later rune poems (Anglo-Saxon, Norwegian, and Icelandic) and the Gothic alphabet. Historical evidence for the existence in antiquity of a developed philosophical-mantic “system of meanings” of the kind that is popular today is extremely scarce.
The modern esoteric layer: elaborated symbolic, psychological, and mantic interpretations took shape predominantly in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries under the influence of the occult revival (including the works of Guido von List and, later, those of Ralph Blum, Edred Thorsson, and Jungian researchers). In contemporary culture the runes are perceived as archetypal symbols of natural and life processes.
Structure: Three Ættir
The 24 runes of the Elder Futhark are traditionally divided into three groups of eight characters — ættir (Old Norse ætt, pl. ættir — “kin,” “family,” “group of eight”). This division is already attested on early monuments (for example, on the Vadstena bracteate).
The first aett (the aett of Freyr / Freyja): the runes from Fehu to Wunjo. Associated with the basic forces of creation, the material world, survival, social bonds, and primary energy.
The second aett (the aett of Heimdall / Hagal): the runes from Hagalaz to Sowilo. Reflects the forces of nature, elemental crises, trials, the overcoming of limitations, and a person’s inner transformation.
The third aett (the aett of Týr / Tyr): the runes from Tiwaz to Othala. Describes the higher laws of order, spiritual development, justice, ancestral roots, and the completion of cycles.
