The Mosaic of Northern Myth: Sources, Method, and the Limits of Knowledge

In contemporary culture, Old Norse mythology is surrounded by an aura of monolithicity and austere

romanticism. Popular imagination easily conjures the image of a flawlessly constructed universe: the colossal

ash tree Yggdrasil, among whose branches nine distinct worlds are strictly ordered; warriors feasting in Valhalla;

noble Æsir led by the all-seeing Odin and the indomitable Thor; and finally, runs — enigmatic signs often

credited with an ancient, codified magical system of divination.

Yet the reality of the historical tradition is structured differently - far more complex, paradoxical, and

incomparably more fascinating.

Old Norse paganism knew no sacred canonical scriptures, no uniform body of dogma, and no centralized priestly

hierarchy What we today designate as "Norse mythology" is an aggregate of regional cults, oral traditions, ritual

practices, and poetic formulas that circulated across centuries over a vast expanse stretching from Norway and

Sweden to Denmark, Iceland, Britain, and Greenland.
