Working with Runic Formulas

Working with Runic Formulas

Modern meanings of runes, formulas, and staves are not unchanging ancient laws or guaranteed mechanisms for directly influencing the physical world. In practical practice, they serve as tools for mental focus, meditation, gaining clarity over one’s own motivations, and anchoring one’s will and intention.

Creating and using formulas is built on a systematic approach to thinking and shaping one’s personal space.

1. Setting Your Intention

State your goal as clearly as possible, in the present tense, and only in relation to yourself and what is within your control:

• Incorrect: "I want all my problems to solve themselves, and for my neighbour to pay me back what they owe."

• Correct: "I focus my attention, strength, and resources on restoring financial stability and managing my affairs wisely."

2. Choosing Runes and Their Order

A classic formula structure typically consists of 3 to 5 symbols:

1. First Rune (The Initiator): The starting point or source of energy (e.g., Fehu — resources; Kenaz — insight or inspiration).

2. Central Rune (The Driver): The process of change taking place (e.g., Raido — journey and progress; Algiz — protection and balance).

3. Final Rune (The Outcome): The desired end result (e.g., Jera — reward and harvest; Wunjo — joy and harmony; Dagaz — transformation and breakthrough).

3. The Statement of Intent (Verbal Anchoring)

This is a clear affirmation — spoken aloud or held in mind — that defines the scope and boundaries of your work with the symbols. It should meet three key criteria:

• Be phrased positively (avoid double negatives or words like "not," "never").

• Never override the free will or autonomy of others.

• Include a note of safety, protecting your own mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

4. Visualisation and Meditative Focus

Draw or inscribe your formula onto paper, wood, fabric, or another surface. Spend several minutes focusing calmly on the pattern, mentally connecting each rune to its meaning and the purpose you have set.

5. Linear Formula or Rune Staff?

• Linear Formulas are read and understood sequentially, step by step. They work well for ongoing processes that unfold over time — such as study, travel, or working through a project in stages.

• Staves (Bindrunes) weave several runes together into a single symbol, concentrating all their meanings into one point — here and now. They are ideal for stabilising a state of mind, bringing harmony to your home, or deep meditation.

6. Closing Your Practice

Once your intention has been fulfilled, or the timeframe you set has come to an end, respectfully deactivate the physical symbol: burn the paper with gratitude for the inner work it supported, or gently wash away or erase marks made on other surfaces.
