Types and directions of runic magic.

In the ancient Norse tradition and modern runology, several key directions of runic magic are distinguished, which differ in method of influence, form, and goals.

1.    Verbal direction: Galdr

Based on vibrational and sound influence.

• Essence: Singing or chanting the names of runes, runic spells, and formulas in falsetto or throat voice.

• Application: Activation of runic staves, incantations for protection, healing, summoning gods and elements.

• Feature: The main tool is the practitioner's voice and the breath force (ōðr) embedded in the intention.

2.    Graphic direction: Erilcraft and Galdrastafir

Working with visual symbols, signs, and written magic.

• Spells and formulas (Alu, Laukar, etc.): Applying single runes or sequences (runescripts) to objects, weapons, amulets.

• Bindrunes: Combining several runic signs into one common symbol for concentrated effect.

• Galdrastafir (Galdrastafir): A later Icelandic tradition (16th–17th centuries). Graphic signs and "magic helmets" (e.g., Aegishjalmur - Helm of Awe, Vegvísir - Runic compass), combining runes with heraldic and esoteric elements.

3.    Predictive direction: Runic divination (Spá / Spádómr)

Using runes for divination - reading probabilities and analyzing situations.

• Essence: Drawing or casting runic tokens (made of wood, stone, or bone) followed by interpreting their выпавшие values and mutual arrangement.

5.    Ritual direction: Consecration and Talismanic magic

A complex ritual combining the application, coloring, and activation of symbols.

• Essence: Includes preparation of the carrier (wood, metal, stone), carving (rísta), coloring (lita - historically with ochre or blood), chanting (gala), and offering gifts (blót) to divine forces.

• Application: Creation of durable amulets, charms for the home, warrior talismans.

The Scandinavian magical system most often combines these directions: a graphic symbol is carved on a carrier, activated by voice (galdr), and consecrated with a ritual address to the gods.
