The number of runes in a stav or formula

The number of runes in a stav or formula directly affects the complexity, focus, and energy expenditure of the work:

1–3 runes (Simple formulas, single runes):

Speed and accuracy: They work as quickly and directly as possible. The fewer elements, the less room for ambiguous interpretation.

Ease of activation: They require minimal energy expenditure from the operator.

Application: Solving local, simple tasks (e.g., protection during travel, attracting quick luck, calming pain).

4–7 runes (Complex formulas and bound runes):

Balance and detail: The optimal number for most tasks. It allows for setting the cause, process, and desired outcome (the "Beginning — Development — Outcome" scheme).

Stability: Sufficiently energy-intensive to maintain stable action over a long period.

Application: Situations requiring step-by-step development of events (healing, attracting financial flow, harmonizing relationships).

8+ runes (Complex multi-layered staves, galdrastaves, bindings):

Multi-level: Capable of encompassing multiple spheres simultaneously, removing blocks, changing behavioral patterns, and protecting the result.

High energy intensity: Requires the operator to have a large reserve of personal power or to connect to external sources (appealing to the Gods, ritualistic components).

Risk of rune conflict: The more elements, the higher the probability of overlapping meanings (when the actions of individual runes begin to contradict each other) or the appearance of uncontrolled secondary runes.

What else is important to pay attention to:

Secondary runes: In complex graphic staves, random runes are formed at the intersection of lines. If they are not taken into account and specified, they can distort the final result or introduce side effects.

Principle of overload: A stav overloaded with runes may work slower ("heavy to get going") or require constant recharging.

Principle of conciseness: In runic tradition, the rule "Complexity must be justified" applies. If a task can be solved with 3 runes, it is impractical to create a formula with 9 runes
