Runes and the forces of the elements.

Runes are traditionally associated with the basic forces of nature and elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth, as well as Ice and Ether/Spirit). Each element reflects a certain type of energy and dynamic processes.

1.    The Element of Fire (Transformation, passion, breakthrough)

Fire symbolizes the primal impulse, purification, the energy of action, creative self-expression, and the destruction of the old for the sake of the new.

Kenaz — a torch, artificial light, awareness, embodiment of ideas, creative flame.

Fehu — the fire of creation, the primal impulse of movement, material growth.

Sowilo — the sun, absolute light, victory, healing and scorching power.

Thurisaz — lightning, penetrating force, active defense, sharp energy.

2.              The Element of Water (Emotions, intuition, currents)

Water is associated with the unconscious, deep feelings, flexibility, adaptation, and smooth changes in states.

Laguz — a stream, intuition, a guiding force, adaptability, imagination.

Perthro — a womb, the mysteries of the unconscious, hidden processes, the origins of fate.

Ehwaz — ebb and flow, harmonious movement, partnership interaction.

3.              The Element of Air (Intellect, word, mental)

Air is responsible for thought, communication, information transfer, inspiration, and invisible influence.

Ansuz — the divine word, wisdom, inspiration, communication.

Raidho — direction, rhythm, wind, guiding the way.

Gebo — exchange of energy, mutual understanding, air exchange, connecting partners.

4.              The Element of Earth (Materialization, stability, form)

Earth provides physical support, structure, the fruits of labor, material wealth, and grounding.

Othala — ancestral home, property, grounded traditions, boundaries.

Uruz — wild physical strength, endurance, the vital energy of nature.

Jera — harvest, natural cycles, the fruits of long labor, seasonal changes.

Berkana — growth, motherhood, protection and nourishment of form.

5.              The Element of Ice (Freezing, conservation, structure)

In northern tradition, Ice (Muspelheim vs Niflheim) is a separate fundamental element, the opposite of Fire.

Isa — ice, stopping, concentration, freezing of processes, self-control.

Hagalaz — hail, a destructive elemental crystal, primal purification through chaos.

6.              Ether / Spirit (Universe, time, fate)

The energy of space, uniting all elements.

Eihwaz — the World Tree Yggdrasil, the axis of all elements and worlds.

Dagaz — the transformation of time, breakthrough, the change of day and night.

Algiz — higher spiritual protection and connection with higher powers.
