Fylgja in the Northern Runic Tradition

Fylgja in the Northern Runic Tradition
Fylgia (from Old Norse "to follow" or "placenta") -
spirit guide, guardian spirit, astral double of a person in the Old Norse and Icelandic traditions.
In sagas and skaldic poetry, filgia appears in two main forms:
Zoomorphic - a spirit in the form of an animal, reflecting the hidden character, social status or magical power of a person:
Wolf / Bear: warriors, berserkers, chieftains. Aggression, strength, dominance. Possessors of a stubborn and ferocious nature.
Eagle / Falcon: - rulers, kings. Broad view, power.
Fox / snake: - cunning, cautious people, diplomats.
Strategists, cunning politicians, soothsayers and experts in seidr.
Ox / Little Bull: - hardworking, persistent farmers, resilient, industrious, and reserved people. Or wealthy farmers.
An anthropomorphic - a female protective spirit of the clan. A guardian spirit of the clan in the form of a maiden or woman in armor, similar to the Disir and Valkyries. Closely associated with the cult of the Disir and the concept of the Norns. She does not perish with the physical body. At the death of a clan member, she leaves it and passes to the most worthy relative or newborn heir. She preserves the clan's good fortune (Hamingja), warns of clan danger, and maintains the tribal line.
In everyday life, a fylgja is invisible. Seeing one's own fylgja in a dream or in reality is a warning of imminent death. This signified the spirit's final separation from the physical shell. Seeing another person's fylgja is a sign of a high level of magical sensitivity or clairvoyance. In modern and traditional runic practice, working with a fylgja revolves around recognizing its hidden potential, receiving warnings, and projecting one's will. It was believed that a fylgja preceded its owner in time and space. A sensitive person could hear a footstep or sense the presence of a fylgja before they entered the house. The primary arena for interaction with one's fylgja is dreams, where the spirit acts as an advisor or reveals future events.
Diagnostics and divination: Reading the totemic form of the filgia allows one to determine the true motives, vulnerabilities and energy potential of the object of diagnosis.
Protective staves and ligatures: The use of formulas based on Algiz + Evaz + Mannaz is aimed at activating the ancestral guardian spirit for constant automatic monitoring of threats.
In runic art and mantics, the concept of fylgja is revealed through the spectrum of Elder Futhark Runes:
Algiz: The rune of communication channels with higher protective beings. It functions as a protective circuit and conductor. It is the rune of the higher self, connecting a person with their spiritual protector. It symbolizes the antenna and protective shield through which the fylgja sends signals of danger.
Evaz: Tandem and astral transport. The rune of partnership and interaction between a person and their spirit carrier. Denotes the harmonious movement of consciousness and fylgja.
Symbolizes the harmonious continuum between the human ego and his spirit companion.
Uruz: Primal animal force. Used to awaken and nourish zoomorphic filgia.
Ansus: Represents the divine spark, connection to Odin, and the ability to receive revelations and dreams from the filgia.
Manaz: Individuality and ancestral code. The rune of integration. Responsible for the balance between the conscious self and the subconscious double, Filgja. Reflects the structure of the human personality and inherited ancestral memory.
Perth: Gate of Fate. Manifestation of the Hidden. Through Perth, one can discover one's invisible companion and read prophetic dreams brought by the fylgja.
Laguz: An intuitive channel and dreamstream. The subconscious stream, an astral realm in which the zoomorphic fylgja takes on visible form.
Odal—Heritage and family code. Used exclusively when working with family fylgja, connecting the practitioner with the guardian spirits of their genealogical line.
In traditional practices of seiðr and out-of-body travel, the eril or sorcerer used the fylgja as:
A guide through the Nine Worlds. The spirit animal paved a safe route through Utgard and other layers of the Yggdrasil tree.
Astral Scouting: In Seidr practice, an eril or völva sends a filgia forward to scout out an area, assess an opponent's intentions, or provide protection while traveling through the Yggdrasil Tree.
Source of Personal Power: Establishing conscious contact with the fylgja was considered a key step in gaining wholeness and control over one's own potential.
Runic formulas for working with fylgja:
1. Diagnosis and manifestation of the image of Yulgya in dreams
Ansus - Perth - Laguz
(ᚨ — ᛈ — ᛚ)
Ansus: gives understanding of the received sign and allows you to remember the contact.
Perth: hides the veil and reveals the true form of the fylgja,
Laguz: immerses consciousness in the flow of dreams.
It is applied to the carrier before going to bed with the goal of seeing and recognizing the appearance of your spiritual companion.
2. Establishing a permanent connection and synchronization with the fylgja.
Algiz - Evaz - Manaz
(ᛉ — ᛖ — ᛗ)
Algiz establishes a protected spiritual channel.
Ehwaz establishes a smooth mutual connection and harmonizes the biorhythms of the practitioner with his fylgja.
Mannaz: captures the personality of a person.
It is applied to a long-term amulet for daily wear in order to learn to sense the presence of the spirit in reality (through bodily responses or premonitions).
3. Summoning the family fylgja.
Odal - Perth - Ansus - Algiz
(ᛟ — ᛈ — ᚨ — ᛉ)
Odal: appeals to the memory of the family,
Perth: Activates inherited defense patterns.
Ansus: Facilitates dialogue with the keeper.
Algiz protects the application process itself.
Used in rituals of invoking the family tree to obtain support in crisis situations.
4. Joint astral work with the fylgja and protection on the way
Algiz - Evaz - Ansus
(ᛉ — ᛖ — ᚨ)
Algiz: holds the shield.
Evaz: Provides speed and flexibility for the totem spirit to move.
Ansus: maintains the practitioner's awareness during meditative or shamanic journeys.
It is used in seiðr practices to send the fylgja to explore space or for protection during spiritual practices.
Before activating the communication formulas, a preliminary check is always carried out to determine the current state of the fylgja - whether it is weakened and ready for direct contact.
When casting runes, the key emphasis is on safe perception, mutual respect, and clear communication channels, without attempting to rigidly subjugate the spirit to one's will. Connection is developed systematically—through messages in dreams, spontaneous visual images of animals in meditations, and sudden intuitive cues in times of danger.
