Activation of Runic formulas with the Elements.

The ritual of activating runic formulas (staves) with the four elements is a practical method that has formed in modern graphic magic (Norse esotericism and runology). Ancient sources (such as the "Poetic Edda" or the "Hávamál") describe only basic principles of inscribing and "animating" signs (carving, coloring, blowing), while the concept of the four elements was later adapted from Western occult tradition. Nevertheless, activation with the elements is today considered one of the most harmonious and powerful ways to "launch" a formula.

Ritual Preparation

Before starting, a workspace is created where all four elements are symbolically represented:

• North (Earth): A container with salt, soil, or river sand.

• East (Air): Incense (frankincense, wormwood, cedar, sandalwood) or a feather.

• South (Fire): A candle (preferably beeswax; color is chosen based on the task).

• West (Water): A bowl with clean (spring or blessed) water.

In the center, the medium with the runic formula already inscribed is placed (paper, wood, stone, metal).

Step-by-Step Activation Algorithm

Before consecration by the elements, the formula is "spoken" – a clear intention (the goal of the work, conditions, duration, and safety) is pronounced. After this, the stave is sequentially consecrated by each element.

1.    Earth (Fixation and Materialization)

• Action: Place the medium on the salt/earth for a few seconds or lightly sprinkle it.

• Words/Declaration: "I activate this formula with the power of Earth. May Earth give my intention a solid foundation, stability, and materialization."

2.              Air (Direction and Thought Transmission)

• Action: Pass the medium through the smoke of burning incense or gently waft air over it (you can blow lightly on the formula).

• Words/Declaration: "I activate this formula with the power of Air. May Air carry my intention and direct it towards the goal."

3.              Fire (Transformation and Energy)

• Action: Quickly and carefully pass the formula over the candle flame (so as not to burn the medium).

• Words/Declaration: "I activate this formula with the power of Fire. May Fire ignite the runes and give them the strength to fulfill."

4.              Water (Flow and Adaptation)

• Action: Sprinkle the stave with a few drops of water from the bowl (or lightly touch it with wet fingers).

• Words/Declaration: "I activate this formula with the power of Water. May Water fill the runes with life, gentleness, and harmonious movement."

Completion and Invocation of the 5th Element

After passing through all four elements, the formula is raised above the altar or held in the palms, warmed by one's breath:

1.    Breath (Element of Spirit/Life): Take a deep breath and exhale onto the formula, transferring a part of your personal energy with the words: "The formula comes alive and begins its work right now."

2.    Gratitude: Be sure to thank the elements for their help.

3.    Further Actions: The candle and incense should burn down completely. The salt and water after the ritual are taken to a tree or poured into the earth.

Choosing a carrier

For working with Fire and Water, choose stable materials (wood, stone, dense paper/cardboard).

Activation by burning

If the formula is created for a one-time impulse (e.g., for the fulfillment of a specific desire), it is activated by completely burning it in a candle flame, and the ash is scattered in the wind.

Deactivation

Upon completion of the formula's term of validity, it must be thanked and deactivated (paper/wood is burned, stone/metal is washed away with water with the intention to "erase" the work).
