Runic Divination: A Practical Guide

Runic divination is a symbolic system for analyzing situations and inner states, built on

the interpretation of signs from the traditional runic alphabet. In modern culture, runes

are often perceived as a magical oracle, but for conscious and safe practice it's

important from the outset to distinguish two dimensions:

1. Historical use: runes originated as a writing system of the Germanic peoples,

used for memorial inscriptions, marking property, dedication formulas, and

recording poetic lines.

2. Modern esoteric practice: rune divination in its current form (drawing tiles from a

pouch, positional spreads, psychological interpretation) did not emerge all at once

or in a single stage. The first esoteric systems based on runes appeared at the

turn of the 19th–20th centuries (for example, the "Armanic runes" of Guido von

List), but the format familiar today—mantic spreads with a pouch and positional

schemes—took shape later, in the 1980s, largely thanks to the book by Ralph

Blum, who drew directly on Carl Gustav Jung's theory of synchronicity.
